LOGIC SIMULATOR README FILE
----------------------------
*** LOGIC SIMULATOR Ver. 1.01 (C) Copyright 1989/90 ***
--------------------------------------------------------
Dr. A J Warren, 3 Plevna Terrace, Bingley,
BD16 4BX, West Yorkshire, England.
-------------------------------------
Thank you for trying LOGIC SIMULATOR!
-------------------------------------
The program LOGIC SIMULATOR was originally written as part of a Master
of Science (MSc.) degree in 1989/90, and has been developed further
and distributed under the shareware principle. The rationale for the
program is outlined below.
Due to the importance of logic devices, Universities, Colleges and
Schools are required, as part of their computing and electronics course
provision, to teach logic functions and their combination. There are
generally requirements in these courses for practical sessions, where
logic patch boards are wired up and tested.
Usually the circuits have to be designed on paper and then 'hard-wired'
on a patch board, tested and the results evaluated. The boards are
generally unreliable in that some, through misuse or age, develop faults
in switches, devices, lamps or wires. This situation can be very
frustrating as it is not clear whether the fault lies in the design or
its physical representation. Add to this the cost of purchasing and
maintaining the boards, and a computer simulation represents a good
choice.
The program simulates the connection and operation of a logic patch
board using a PC compatible computer. Use of this program should reduce
the quantity of dedicated equipment purchased and maintained by an
educational establishment when delivering courses requiring the use of
logic boards. It should also relieve some of the frustrating aspects
of logic courses that are outlined above.
It is not envisaged that the need for patch boards will be eliminated
altogether, as some benefit may be derived from the experience of
physically connecting together the components of a circuit. Students
should in future, however, be confident that once a circuit has been
tested on the simulator, any faulty operation encountered would be the
result of incorrect connection or faulty devices rather than any errors
in the circuit design.
